Quite possibly our favorite event of New York Craft Beer Week, this walk-around tasting pairs over a dozen different breweries with small plates produced by New York City chefs and food producers. On top of the food and beer, Brooklyn Brewery’s Garrett Oliver will be the keynote speaker this year. It’s an event that’s not to be missed.
Having beer does not a beer garden make and here’s why (finally, someone had to say it).
This place is not - nor has it ever been - a beer garden. (Photo via DoctorWho on Flickr)
We’re starting to sound like a broken record here. We’ve come across some pretty awful lists of “the best beer gardens in New York” over the summer, but this one from NYC 10 Best might be the worst offender of them all, mainly for one of their selections:
McSorley’s Old Ale House. 15 East 7th Street, East Village. When it doors opened in 1854 this NY beer garden was called “The Old House at Home” and is conisidered the oldest active bar in the city. Today, this bar now renamed to McSorley’s, still only serves their two, 150 year old house draft beers – McSorley’s Cream Stock Ale and McSorley’s Famous Lager [Ed. note: McSorley’s hasn’t served a “Cream Stock Ale” in a long time. They serve an Irish Red Ale and an Irish Dark Lager]. Every serious NY beer drinker must visit this historic spot and try both flavors while standing on the saw dust covered floors at least once in their lifetime.
We really shouldn’t even have to explain why McSorley’s isn’t a beer garden. Never - EVER - in McSorley’s history has it been called a “beer garden.” A bar, perhaps. A tavern? Sure. But anyone who thinks that McSorley’s qualifies as a beer garden has either been drinking too much beer, or has absolutely no idea what a beer garden is.
We have three simple qualifications for a beer garden:
Way back in the Spring, we mentioned a new craft beer bar from the folks behind Lord Hobo in Cambridge, Mass., and Alewife in Baltimore that was in the works for Long Island City: Alewife Queens (5-14 51st Ave., at 5th St., Long Island City). It takes a while to get a place up and…
Does everyone know about this? If you are a woman or a LGBTQ individual you can get free cab rides home thanks to RightRides (sorry “normative” hetero dudes, but you get pretty much everything else).
Out late thinking of walking home alone or taking the subway? You can get a cab instead. All you have to do is call between the hours of 11:59 PM and 3 AM on Friday or Saturday night (otherwise known as Saturday or Sunday morning).

Since the 1870s, Steinway & Sons has been shaping Astoria’s history. (6.27.11, 1 Steinway Place, near 19th Ave.)
From New York Magazine:
The old Steinway Village surrounding the factory once featured schools, post offices, and shops. Many of these buildings are still standing; the original workers’ rowhouses can be seen on 20th Ave., between 41st and 42nd Streets. The Steinway Mansion is on the corner of 42nd Street and 19th Avenue.

I MADE IT! This makes me insanely happy (much more than it should).
A meaty post from uncouthinthecity:
‘Taken today at Burger Heaven in NYC. Nails (which are sadly a little chipped) are courtesy of Sally Hansen Salon Effects Nail Polish Strips in houndstooth. The burger was alright, not as juicy as I like them to be, but only cost me $1 thanks to a daily deal website. I give it a 7 out of 10 because it was so cheap.’
Chips? What Chips? Thanks Uncouth!
